THE PORTUGUESE WORLD AND THE GREAT WAR

The CPHRC and the University of Stirling are currently organising an international one-day conference to coincide with the centenary of Portugal's involvement in the First World War. The conference will take place at the University of Stirling towards the end of June 2016 and will cover the following topics:

Panel 1. Portugal political and social: an examination of the events in Portugal from the January 1915 Movimento das Espadas to the assassination of Sidónio Pais in December 1918. Topics to be covered will include the social protest over food prices, the strike waves and the Fátima apparitions.

Panel 2. The Portuguese colonies: before Portugal entered the war in Europe it was involved in a number of engagements in Angola and Mozambique. This panel will explore the conflicts in the colonies and the role they played in Portugal's involvement in the wider European conflagration.

Panel 3. Portugal on the Western Front: examining the eventual deployment of Portuguese troops to northern Europe and their participation in the conflict. This panel will also cover such topics as troop morale and divisions within the army between anti-Republican officers at home and pro-Republican officers on the front line.

Panel 4. Southern Europe and the Great War: this panel will look at the experiences of other southern European states, such as Greece, Spain and Italy, in the conflict as a way of placing Portugal's involvement in a wider geopolitical context.

It is our intention to publish the proceedings in a special edition of a leading contemporary history journal or in a book.
